This delightful, Victorian Scottish agate pin is unmarked as many were. However it does test as sterling silver. It is a really a beautiful combination of the cross of St. Andrew , the crown and citrine gemstones. It measures 1 and 3/8 (3.5cms) across and weighs 7.3 grams. The outer ring has the most beautiful combination of agates dark green blood agate, beige red speckled and red jasper. They are arranged in curved slivers within the delicately engraved silver. High up lies the silver Saltire of Scotland. St Andrew felt unable to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus so this X style of cross represents his martyrdom.
It is inlaid with red and dark mottled agates. Across the centre is a silver engraved crown set with three citrines. This is most probably a gesture of allegiance to Queen Victoria who so loved the Scottish Highlands. The back is plain silver and there is a solid, old style c clip. In excellent , antique condition with the tiniest signs of age, this rare and very fine piece will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
